Two ex-Tigers found themselves in opposing dug-outs in strange circumstances in the first round of this season’s FA Cup.
Hednesford Town sacked their manager Steve King during the build-up to their home tie against Gainsborough Trinity and put three of their backroom staff in temporary charge for it – former City midfield player Carl “Junior” Lewis, Martin Hunter and Andy Turner.
Lewis, now 51, was a member of City’s 2004-05 promotion team from the First Division. But he has since had a significant coaching career, including spells with Leeds United – when ex-Tiger Dave Hockaday was their manager – Barnet and Dagenham and Redbridge before joining Hednesford.
Former City central defender Russ Wilcox, meanwhile, has now been in charge for more than a year at Gainsborough, who won the tie 5-4 on penalties after a 4-4-draw. It earned them a second-round trip to Harrogate Town as the lowest-ranked club still in the competition and the game will be televised live by the BBC on November 29.
